Once you pick your class, you must pick a dark or light path and then choose which deity you will worship. Whether you choose a High Elf, Temple Guardian, Seraphim, Dryad, Shadow Warrior or Inquisitor determines what weapons, spells, mounts and equipment you'll be able to use in your adventures.
There are six character classes to choose from, and each comes with his or her special attributes and abilities, in true RPG fashion. The action takes place from a third-person perspective that allows you to zoom in close for an over-the-shoulder view or far in the air for a top-down look. If you've played games like Diablo or Too Human, you'll get the idea. Sacred 2 is all about exploring the gigantic game world (we're told it's 22 square miles) and collecting the myriad loot that falls from the cold, dead hands of your vanquished enemies. But from what I've played of the alpha-level preview so far, it's clear that Ascaron has retained the hardcore PC vibe of its predecessor.
The console version of Sacred 2 is still very much a work in progress, and there's still a lot developer Ascaron will need to take care of before the game launches for Xbox 360 on March 24. This spring, console gamers will be able to visit the magical land of Ancaria as well, and I've been playing an early build of the Xbox 360 port in the office in recent days. German publisher cdv Software released the action role-playing game Sacred 2: Fallen Angel for PC last year, and IGN PC editor Charles Onyett liked it well enough that he bought the T-shirt.
